Iowa Caucuses

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign scares me but, not for the reasons you might think. In fact, I’ll probably vote for him in Washington State’s caucuses next month.
No, what scares me is this awful feeling of Déjà Vu all over again. I’m sure others have thought about it but don’t want to say it for fear that, if they say it, it will happen. But, it has to be said and, we have to look within ourselves to prevent it from happening. “What the hell are you rambling about, Leezard,” you must be asking.
So, here it is. Barack Obama is one of those rare people who come along maybe once every generation. He is beyond charismatic. He is inspirational. His speeches are brilliant.
Did you hear his victory speech in Iowa? The pundits on CNN immediately labeled it "one of the most important political speeches of the year." He stands to become our nation’s first African American president and, what scares me is that Barack Obama is just the kind of person some whacko will try to whack. He is Martin Luther John Robert Kennedy.
The Blogosphere is already talking about this. Follow this link to “Yahoo Answers:” http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071222170206AALC4sF.
Blogger Rick Moran writes on his “Rightwing Nuthouse” site (http://rightwingnuthouse.com/archives/2007/02/12/obama-and-the-assassination-factor/):
“By any measure, Senator Obama’s candidacy is different (from those of other black candidates). He is attracting big time money and picking up big time endorsements while a growing, enthusiastic grass roots movement is propelling him forward. His appeal spans race, region, and party. He has as good a shot of winning the Presidency as any of the front-runners in either party.
Does it matter that his race makes him more of a target for assassination? I believe it does indeed but perhaps not in any way that would cost him votes. I think what the increased likelihood of danger for Obama does is change the external dynamic of the campaign for both the Senator’s Democratic challengers and, if it comes to it, the man he will face in the general election.”
Is there any way to prevent such a tragedy from happening? I’m not sure. Just like I’m not sure all that supposed “security” at airports can prevent some terrorist from blowing an airplane out of the sky. I think all that so-called airport security is nothing more than public relations for the passengers.
Can anything short of totally isolating Obama protect him from the next James Earl Oswald? The question is irrelevant; Obama would never allow himself to be so isolated.
So, what can be done? I don’t have an answer. Do you?
