I love to read but because I had the classics thrust upon me during my youthful rebellion against the New York City school system, I cheated myself. The Original Cover - 1902 Why this woeful admission now? I’ve just finished reading The Virginian , the American classic by Owen Wister. I cannot remember when I have loved a book more. I was actually sad as I turned the last page, sad that I could read no more. Before we continue, a brief summary: Loosely based on Wyoming’s famous Johnson County cattle war in the 1890s, the novel was originally entitled The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains .
